BODY AND POLITICS IN THE RETURN TO DEMOCRACY IN URUGUAY: THE INTEGRATION OF SOCIETY AND PERSISTENT VIOLENCE

This paper analyzes the relationship between politics and the governing of the body in the return to democracy in Uruguay, following the last civilian-military dictatorship (1973-1985). During this period, various innovative proposals emerged seeking to change their approach to the development of Physical Education, sport and recreation and trying to integrate a fragmented political society. However, the attempt to downplay the political effects of bodily practices signals continuity with the dictatorship, bringing to light similarities between both political regimes’ governing of the body.
