This paper is aimed to make a distinction between a generic criticism of school physical education and the so called Critical Physical Education. After a review of the last decade scientific literature and a comparison of the conclusions emerging from it with the principles of Critical Pedagogy, this study will demonstrate that in Spain there does not exist any Critical Pedagogy but only very few well-intentioned approaches without solid support. In conclusion, this study will show the fundamental requirements to take into account for outlining both a theoretical and practical alternative in the framework of Critical Physical Education.
