The Chainsaw in the University and the Argentine Scientific System: an analysis of the adjustment policies of Javier Milei's government

The paper provides a conjunctural analysis of the budgetary adjustment policies affecting public universities and the scientific-technological system implemented by the government of Javier Milei in Argentina (since December 2023). Based on a characterization of the recent evolution of public investment, the central axes of the budgetary cuts and their consequences in terms of underfunding and worsening labor conditions for university teachers and researchers are described. The initiatives of resistance and struggle deployed by university trade union organizations, along with other significant actors, are also detailed. These processes are analyzed within the framework of the "global wave" of the rise of the far-right, understood as a project to restore class power that seeks to overcome the organic crisis experienced in the region and worldwide. This work involves a review of the updated bibliography on contemporary far-right movements, a recovery of quantitative data on Argentine universities and their funding, and the use of journalistic and syndical documentary sources to account for the university conflict.
