Federal financial assistance for public education in the municipalities of Araranguá and Balneário Arroio do Silva

The paper presents results of a study about the representativeness of the financial assistance of the Union in education in Balneário Arroio do Silva and Araranguá municipalities. Data about revenue and expenditure in education (2006 and 2011), enrollment (2001, 2006 and 2011) and illiteracy and attendance rates (2010) were investigated. Documental analysis and statistic data were used in the study. Considering the estimated revenue available for education, the Union assistance in 2006 and 2010 for Araranguá was 7% and 10%, respectively. In Balneário Arroio do Silva the assistance was of 15% in 2006 and 7% in 2011. Both municipalities have an expressive availability for early childhood education and elementary school, as well as a need to expand their services. They also received additional resources from Fundef (Fund for Maintenance and Development of the Elementary Education) / Fundeb (Fund for Maintenance and Development of K-12 Education and for Teachers Appreciation). In this context, it is evident the necessity for an increase in the resources for financial assistance from the Union.
