This study aims to present how swimming was developed as an important element of the female physical culture at the beginning of the 20th century. After the analysis of historical sources about feminine physical culture, it is possible to consider that physical activity, especially swimming, was very important to reach the eugenic project proposed by the State, and by some intellectual minds of that period, incorporating the concepts of health, beauty, and grace as unseparable and essential aspects that belonged to the women at the beginning of 20th century in Brazil.Downloads
