    Abstract

The article aims at understanding Valter Bracht’s role in the epistemology of Brazilian Physical Education (PE). Some readings and analysis of the author’s main texts about the theme were carried out, gathered in the book titled “Physical Education & Science: scenes of a (un)happy marriage” (Educação Física & Ciência: cenas de um casamento (in)feliz), published in 1999. As result, it is highlighted that Bracht (1999) sees PE as a social intervention practice, which has in its agenda some challenges, such as: a) the multidisciplinary theorization of the field; b) the limitation of the scientific rationality regarding the organization of the claimed normative (the ethic one) dimension, and also the esthetics one, to a school PE.
