While discussing the historical development of leisure studies, this article supplies elements that help to understand the current stage of organization of this field in Brazilian society. The most expressive authors from the 1970s and later, the associations and important scientific events, as well as the research groups working today, were the indicators selected for the configuration of the field of leisure in Brazil. The article finishes with a reflection upon the necessities and possibilites needed to promote qualitative advances, a challenge offered to professionals and researchers of leisure in Brazil.Downloads
