Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the experiences that helped the professional rise of a Brazilian high-performance tennis coach. A descriptive qualitative approach guided our single case study methodology. At the time of the study, Fernanda was 30 years old and had 12 years of experience as a coach at national and international levels. Data collection included a Rappaport timeline and semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed through reflective thematic analysis. The results cover the following themes: (a) Influence, Connection, and Inspiration: Fundamental Characters; (b) Promising Profile and Welcome in Context; and (c) Development as a Coach: Constant Learning and Questions along the Way. In sum, Fernanda had a trajectory guided by influential relationships with specific characters of her context. The moments outside her comfort zone contributed to define strategies to meet her needs and overcome the identified barriers.
