This ethnographical study looks into body representations, specifically pain and its relationship with expressions of masculinity. It examines how views of pain and masculinities can affect people’s interactions when bodybuilding in a fitness center located in a popular neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. Based on the theory and methodology of symbolic interactionism, it was possible to see how the diversity of ways of being a man interferes with multiple views of pain and limits in risk management in body practices.
