The objective of this study was to understand how sports were appropriated in Brazil, particularly in São Paulo at the turn of the 20th century. For this, we used as sources: newspapers and magazines that thematized the sport during the study period. Concluded that in the context of the Brazilian culture, the sports were reinterpreted, even though the parameter of European modernity.
