In the first half of the 19th century were structured in the Rio de Janeiro several initiatives related to dance, organized in a context marked by a social life increasingly dynamic, which had as one of the indicators the conformation of an entertainment market. This study aims to discuss, in this context, dance education experiences in non-school settings. As timeframes, it adopted 1810s, when it started to take shape such initiatives, and the 1850s, the height of the popularity of dance in the city. To reach the goal, as sources were used newspapers and magazines published in the period. It has expected to better understand an important sphere of body education that had several points of interface with other social areas, including school, and is also a facet of the city’s history that deserves to be unveiled.
