Abstract

This paper analyzes the relationships established between the State and college sports associations from the 1930s to the early 1940s. We use newspapers from the National Library in Rio de Janeiro as well as specialized bibliography on the topic. During that period, sports were a relevant institutional sphere in the assemblage of relations between the State and college students. Moreover, the nature of these relationships ultimately determined the way sports developed at Brazilian colleges from then on, shaping an institutional architecture that somehow survives to this day.
