This article seeks to understand under what conditions girls living in regions with high rates of violence against women negotiate their access to and enjoyment of leisure. The empirical material was produced with 50 girls aged between 9 and 17, from two schools, through participant observation, field notes, semi-structured interviews, and a focus group. The accounts indicate that the risks and the imminence of violence ensure the effectiveness of gender pedagogies that allow them to be present in leisure spaces. By avoiding dark places, seeking busier times, and modulating their presence according to perceived risks, those girls operate a reading of urban space forged through everyday experiences that teach them to live under surveillance and to self-regulate. Violence, in this sense, does not appear as an isolated event, but as a structuring mechanism that shapes women’s use of public and leisure spaces.
