Karate, one of the most widely practiced combative physical activities today, is sought after to help discipline children, such as self-defense or physical conditioning. This research aims to problematize the appropriation of the notion of “playfulness” in karate teaching. To this end, a bibliographical research was conducted, with the main references being the works of Johan Huizinga and Roger Caillois. For both authors, playfulness serves its own end, producing nothing other than entertainment itself. However, the term “playfulness” has been used, with regard to karate classes for children, as a form of encouragement, since this is supposedly characterized by a rigorous authoritarianism. The problem addressed in this study is: by using games as a teaching tool, is it still playful? The results point to a misapplication of the term “playfulness” when referring to specific pedagogical tools.
