This work aims to analyse the ways in which teachers specializing in Physical Education and reference teachers have been meeting demands and taking positions in their 1st cycle teachings. In order to do that, an ethnographic study was conducted in two schools from the Municipal School System in Porto Alegre. Certain discourses were found that create hierarchies among teachers – especially those related to childhood. In this scenario, the Reference teacher is in charge of most of the group’s demands and is seen in school culture and by students as ‘the’ class teacher; while specialized teachers meet mostly their own classes’ demands, with little effective participation in collective decision-making or in other activities that take part in the 1st cycle.
