The main objective was to analyze the perception of managers regarding the role of female coaches in academic athletic associations in Porto Alegre. A descriptive survey design was adopted, using a semi-structured interview. The study included 14 managers of student athletic associations in Porto Alegre who competed in the two main intercollegiate championships of the year, selected by convenience sampling. Results were analyzed through content analysis. The thematic categories identified were: “Identification of the Athletic Associations”, “Hiring”, “Gender”, “Sports”, “Competitions”, and “Women Coaches”. Factors explaining the low number of women coaches included lack of opportunities and the continued referral of male coaches to fill these positions. The results indicated that the presence of women as coaches in academic athletic associations remains limited, highlighting the need for institutional strategies to expand opportunities for women’s participation in sports leadership. The study concludes that women’s presence in athletic associations remains very low, and it aims to contribute to changing this scenario.
