Abstract

This paper aims to discuss the main events,as well as the role of agents and institutions that havemade Brazil the 2014 World Cup host country. Theobjective is to denaturalize this choice by showingthat the country is not based merely because FIFA hasa rotation system, or because there was a conspiracybetween Lula and Blatter. I highlight the role of FIFA inthe process, treating it as a private agency, whichinvolves consider legitimate its pretension to profit fromthe World Cup. I try to show how the Braziliangovernment was being seduced by sports officialsand the public to endorse the candidacy, paying for ita contested high economic value, also taking risks tohave its status scratched in case of the World Cup isnot a success.
