Abstract

This study aims to characterize the similarity of online attention received by scientific journals in the field of Information Science, indexed in Brapci, across alternative channels. The methodology consisted of collecting altmetric data through the Altmetric.com platform, considering mentions in informational sources (news, blogs, Wikipedia), social media platforms (X, Facebook), and scientific sources (Mendeley and Dimensions), for 18 journals with at least 100 mentions tracked by the platform. Descriptive analyses, Pearson correlation, and hierarchical cluster analysis were applied to identify patterns and groupings among the journals. The results revealed that most correlations between channels are weak or non-existent, indicating low similarity in mention patterns. Exceptions were observed between Mendeley readers and Dimensions citations, between X and news, and between Dimensions citations and blogs. The cluster analysis grouped the journals into three clusters with distinct characteristics of online attention, highlighting different predominant channels in each group. The study shows that online attention varies according to each journal’s online presence strategy. It is concluded that more planned strategies are needed by journals to increase their visibility across alternative channels. As limitations, the study highlights the high variability of the data and the exclusion of journals with fewer than 100 mentions. Future research may explore online attention behavior across the full range of Brapci journals, in addition to qualitative analysis of journal profiles on web-based social channels.
