No início do XIX, surge na capital francesa uma nova estética teatral, centrada na encenação: a deslocar a percepção do “poético” do espaço da linguagem para o âmbito da cena; a falar diretamente para os populares que ocupavam as plateias, reproduzindo-os também na ribalta, em obras que pela primeira vez os tomavam por tema central. Gênero ilustrativo dessa vertente artística foi o melodrama, ao qual se dedica Jean-Marie Thomasseau em Mélodramatiques, compilação dos artigos mais recentes deste que é, quiçá, o principal estudioso do assunto no mundo – obra à qual se dedica esta resenha.
