This article contemplates in Michael Cimino a reformulation of the problem, constitutive of modern cinema, of believing in this world. A review of the cinemas of revelation provides a reference corpus for the article, whose corpus of analysis is composed of Cimino’s seven feature films. For a consistent concept of belief, we consult Søren Kierkegaard, who distinguishes sensuality, resignation and faith as three modes of relating to the world. Instead of demonstrating ready-made concepts, Cimino’s movements end up suggesting passages and (de)gradations between the modes of existence conceived by the philosopher. Having described a set of decisive dramatic movements, the analysis comes upon the recurrence of a planetary belief that, triggered by friendships in desertion, is also expressed in an art of centrifugal exhalations (at the levels of the frame and the shot) and of divergent parallelisms (at the level of editing).
