This study aimed to investigate how Gymnastics and Physical Education were confirmed in the school context of the state of Rio Grande do Sul in the first decades of the twentieth century. As part of a broader educational process, Gymnastics and Physical Education were adopted at school since the emergence of the Republican regime. Written documents were examined in order to understand that process from a socio-historical perspective, in addition to a literature review. The analysis of the sources found that the concepts of Gymnastics, School hygiene and modernization crossed in the first decades of the twentieth century when Physical Education effectively entered in the state’s school context.
