          Abstract

Open publication of papers and their filing in archives or websites contribute to publicize scientific debate. This paper aims at identifying these practices in journals that publish and cite Spanish university professors. Furthermore, the study examines the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases, number of papers per author, and number of authors per paper. The study reveals that journals indexed by Scopus receive more citations than those indexed by WoS. Over 75% of professors do not publish papers in journals indexed in those databases. The average number of authors per paper is 5.4 for WoS and 6.4 for Scopus, while the number of papers per professor is 7.7 and WoS respectively. Most journals do not grant open access to their contents and few have information about archives. As for the total number of citations and papers in WoS and Scopus, the study has found highly positive correlations. Finally, this paper concludes that scientific information should be opened to the international community, thus contributing to increase journals’ circulation and impact.
