Burnout Syndrome (BS) in professional sports has gained attention but is often disconnected from its origin as a work-related condition. This article systematically reviews 137 studies published between 2014 and 2023 on BS in athletes, using the Atlas.ti® software. The results show that 90.51% of the studies disregard the occupational dimension of BS, limiting its understanding and the effectiveness of interventions. Approaches that individualize the causes and prioritize coaches over athletes dominate among studies that consider the work context. This reflects a lack of acknowledgment of athletes' working conditions and the organizational structures in professional sports. The need for an approach that incorporates the occupational nature of BS is emphasized, addressing working conditions and promoting ethical, structural interventions for a more comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon.
