A relação entre esporte e mudança climática tem recebido crescente destaque na esfera acadêmica. Por um lado, os pesquisadores têm buscado compreender, de forma cada vez mais detalhada, os efeitos concretos e potenciais da mudança climática no mundo esportivo. Por outro, estudos também têm focado em como o esporte contribui para o processo de mudança climática – por exemplo, por meio da produção de resíduos, poluição, perda de biodiversidade e emissões de carbono. O presente artigo propõe uma síntese crítica da literatura acadêmica nessas áreas emergentes de estudo, destacando as principais descobertas, temas recorrentes e projeções para o futuro do esporte. O artigo também considera como o esporte está se adaptando aos desafios impostos pelas transformações climáticas e indica alguns dos principais problemas de pesquisa no campo da ecologia do esporte na atualidade. Por fim, o texto enfatiza a necessidade de fortalecer a pesquisa sobre esporte e mudança climática no Sul Global.
