Imagens e representações: a intransparência cognitiva dos ícones

O trabalho explora a diferença entre as propriedades semânticas e as propriedades icônicas, tidas como idênticas por certas teorias da representação. Ícones não podem ser os conteúdos dos processos cognitivos porque eles não possuem as propriedades sintáticas intrínsecas que tornam possíveis a sua instanciação em eventos mentais. O iconismo é investigado aqui enquanto doutrina requisitada pelas teorias tradicionais da representação (formalista e, sobretudo, empirista). Na versão empirista, uma imagem é definida por meio da noção de semelhança qualitativa. A noção vem sendo criticada pelos defensores da arquitetura clássica da cognição. Nesta perspectiva, representações são identificadas como constituintes sintáticos de itens complexos, para os quais podemos atribuir a propriedade de ser verdadeiro ou falso.Downloads
