This theoretical-reflective article deals with the topic of cartography, chosen for the relevance attributed to it in contrast to mapping, which implies recognizing that observable realities are capable of recognition and are of a rational and sensitive nature. It aims to develop the concept of cartography as a process operated by sensitivity, in the sense of responding to the challenge of working sociocultural representations, intensities and flows, understood as engines for the creation of signification. The meanings are structured in rhizomes, terms in interaction and constant flux, which are organized in tangled webs which configure territories of symbolization. These movements are guided by desire. These territories, although dynamic and changing, allow their cartography based on their movements. In order to make this formulation viable, it was deemed necessary: (a) to review the level of knowledge of the metalanguage in relation to the object-language (in the order of relations between methodology and epistemology), placing the metalanguage in an immediate relation to reality. The disappearance of a preliminary circumscription of a cutout of reality will promote greater opening for interpretation, for capturing elements without a priori pertinence, along the lines of force of assimilation or dispersion; and (b) resume the concept of abduction as discovery reasoning, by excellence. As a result of these propositions, it will explore the cartographic process in the development of applied research in the fields of design and communication.
