Karim Aïnouz's creative process: the movement of the image in creation

Abstract

This research stems from Karim Aïnouz's testimonies to reflect on his vision about the creative act in his cinematographic production. By analyzing the book Conversas sobre uma Ficção Viva (2013) and the interviews conceded by Aïnouz — recorded and made available on YouTube by the São Paulo University - Paulo Emílio (CINEUSP), in 2013, as well as by the Centro Audiovisual Norte-Nordeste (Canne), in 2014 —, we consider him as an active participant in the whole process of filmmaking. The Brazilian director is a screenwriter, a casting director, a maker, a sound editor, and an assembler. He worries about keeping the creative process in pulse and makes of the script a map of a transforming flight. The movement of his images emerges from the vivacity of the creative journey, in which every step is seen with the emotion of what becomes urgent on behalf of its realization.
