Analys of urban sustainability in distended vectors

Fragmented urban expansion and the distended growth of the urban fabric in medium-sized Brazilian cities have created increasing challenges for sustainable mobility. This article analyzes the conditions of urban sustainability along the Dom Pedro II Avenue corridor in João Pessoa-PB, one of the main vectors of expansion in the city. The methodology adopted is based on the application of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Index (IMUS), structured in six evaluation domains: accessibility, infrastructure, non-motorized modes, integrated planning, urban traffic and circulation, and urban transportation system. The study area was segmented into three axes: central, transition, and neighborhoods, representing different types of urban centralities: functional, morphological, and demographic. The results indicate significant contrasts between the analyzed centers, with emphasis on the precariousness of infrastructure and territorial exclusion in peripheral neighborhoods. The analysis highlights the importance of the articulation between urban form, road network, and public policies as a strategy to mitigate the effects of urban sprawl and promote sustainable mobility in expansion contexts.
