Abstract

This article explores the essential relationship between Digital Preservation and Knowledge Management within the scope of Digital Cultural Heritage, arguing that the interaction between both forms a crucial cycle for safeguarding social memory in the digital age. Given the growing importance of Digital Cultural Heritage in a digitally oriented society, the research highlights the need for effective preservation strategies. The study aims to examine the interdependence between Digital Preservation and Knowledge Management, emphasizing how the former ensures future access to Digital Cultural Heritage, while the latter promotes its understanding and significance as the foundation of social memory. The adopted methodology was qualitative, descriptive research based on a literature review. Relevant books and articles from the fields of Information Science, Knowledge Management, Cultural Heritage, and Archival Science were analyzed. The analysis focused on identifying and synthesizing key concepts, theoretical approaches, and challenges involved in articulating Digital Preservation and Knowledge Management within the context of Digital Cultural Heritage. The result was the development of a theoretical model demonstrating the fundamental cycle of Digital Cultural Heritage, showing how preservation facilitates knowledge construction, and how acquired knowledge stimulates appreciation and the subsequent need for ongoing preservation. It is concluded that an integrated approach between Digital Preservation and Knowledge Management is essential to ensure the sustainability and accessibility of Digital Cultural Heritage, thereby strengthening social memory.

Author Biographies

Thiago Felipe Soares da Silva, Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho - UNESP

He is a PhD candidate in Information Science in the Information Science Program at São Paulo State University (UNESP Júlio de Mesquita Filho). He holds a Master's degree in Information Science from the Information Science Program at the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL). He holds several specializations, including Information Technology Management and Public Hospital Management. He holds a Bachelor's degree in History from UFAL and a Bachelor's degree in Law (currently being completed) from UFAL. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Archival Science with an emphasis on Digital Humanities. In addition to his academic background, he has extensive practical professional experience in administrative areas, including Human Resources Management, Hospital Management, and Document Management, which he has acquired through various courses. He currently works at the Federal University of Alagoas as an administrative technician.

Natália Marinho do Nascimento, Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho - UNESP

Assistant Professor in the Department of Information Science and the Graduate Program in Information Science (PPGCI) at the Faculty of Philosophy and Sciences – Unesp, Marília. I previously served as Adjunct Professor of the Archiving course at the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) and of the Graduate Program in Information Science at UFPA (2020–2022). I hold a Ph.D. and Master’s degree in Information Science from the Graduate Program in Information Science at São Paulo State University (UNESP), supported by CAPES scholarships. I completed a Sandwich Doctorate at the University of Salamanca (USAL), Spain (03/2017 – 09/2017), funded by CAPES/PDSE. I graduated in Archiving from São Paulo State University Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP). During my scientific initiation, I received scholarships from FAPESP (2011) and CNPq (2009/2010). I participate in the research group: Information, Knowledge, and Organizational Intelligence (ICIO). I have worked as a Consultant in the areas of Organization, Document Management, and Information Management.

Ieda Ieda Pelógia Martins Damian, Universidade de São Paulo - USP

Assistant: Lecturer at the University of São Paulo in the undergraduate course in Information Science and Documentation of the Department of Education, Communication, and Information at the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences, and Letters - FFCLRP/USP. Lecturer in the Graduate Program in Information Science at Unesp - Marília - SP. Holds a degree in Systems Analysis from Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Campinas (1994), a master's in Organizational Management from FEA-RP/USP (2009), a Ph.D. in Organizational Management from FEA-RP/USP (2012), and postdoctoral research from the University of Salamanca - Spain (2020). Member of the Fiscal Council of the Brazilian Association of Education in Information Science (ABECIN), 2019-2022. Areas of focus include information and knowledge management, reference and information services, information networks, databases, retail administration, information systems, e-commerce, and e-government.

Maria Leandra Bizello, Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho - UNESP

She holds a bachelor's degree in History from the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) (1989), a master's degree in Multimedia from UNICAMP (1995), and a doctorate in Multimedia from UNICAMP. She completed a doctoral internship at Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris III (2006) under the guidance of Prof. Michel Marie. She is a postdoctoral researcher in Information Science from the University of Porto – Portugal, where she developed the project "Archive and Scientific Memory: Production and Evaluation of Documents in the University Environment," supervised by Prof. Fernanda Ribeiro. Currently, she is a professor at the Archiving Program and the Graduate Program in Information Science at UNESP, Marília campus. She has experience in the fields of History, Communication, and Information Science, with an emphasis on History, Memory, and Images, mainly working on topics such as history, memory, cinema, developmentism, photography, document management in universities, and scientific memory.
