Through citation analysis, this study promotes the investigation of 3,451 references cited in 248 scientific documents published by professors of the Information Science Department (DCI) at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), between 2000 and 2008. The study aims to support strategic planning within the Collection Development in the institution’s Library. The results indicate a preference for books and book chapters (44.0%), followed by papers (31.3%), both published in Portuguese (75.3%). The most cited journals are Ciência da Informação (16.6%) and the Journal of the American Society for Information Science (4.9%). It had found 1,603 different authors cited and 1,519 different book’s titles. The ranking of authors and books shows the interdisciplinary character of the DCI and the area itself, reinforcing the notion that this field in Brazil has been developed without constant standards for scientific communication. Finally, the paper concludes that citation analysis is a valuable method to determine information use patterns; however, it requires attention to the results interpretation.Downloads
