The reconfiguration of the Brazilian editorial market for textbooks at the beginning of XXI century: history of the principal editors and their commercial practices

Abstract

The theme of this text is the circulation of textbooks in the recent history of Brazil which for some years has been the subject of my research. The hypothesis is that the public policies for the textbooks and the private publishers, considered in this process market determinations, leave some prints in the selection that precedes the choices made by the teachers at school, and has some implications in the action curriculum at schools, transforming it in a privileged field of studies to understand the relation market – school. Taking this into consideration, three fundamental stances were studied: the publishers of textbooks, with emphasis in their commercial area; the governmental actions, with its focus on the Programa Nacional do Livro Didático – PNDL (National Program of Textbooks) and the school. In this article we will emphasize only the market of great publishing houses, establishing a historical panorama of this sector, the advent of great multinational publishing companies in Brazil, their new strategies and what the implications for the Brazilian schools are.
