Book censorship has been part of human history since the invention of writing and is not limited to countries with totalitarian or fundamentalist regimes. It has been present in Brazil since colonial times, and research on the subject usually focuses on censorship during periods of totalitarian regimes. This research arose from the need to investigate the forms and motivations behind censorship, as well as the perception of people in general about book censorship in Brazil. This study aims to identify the elements that make up acts of book censorship in Brazil, based on motivations, works, and authors. Specifically, we sought to identify acts/events/episodes of censorship; identify the most censored book titles and/or authors; and analyze the reasons behind the censorship of these book titles and/or authors, investigating what kind of issues they are related to. This is a descriptive, bibliographical study with a quali-quantitative approach. The instrument was an online mixed questionnaire and the answers were submitted for content analysis. The results point to the occurrence of book censorship in the country, especially within school libraries, being perpetrated mainly by the institution's authorities and by parents/guardians, mostly between 2022 and 2023. The main reason identified is that the work is considered unsuitable for children and/or adolescents. The motivations behind these censorious acts are influenced by political, religious, and moral issues and themes related to gender and sexual orientation.
