Drawing from concepts taken from cultural studies, the cinematic spectatorship theory, the axiology of criticism and the sociology of culture, we present, in this paper, an analysis of the elitism of the critical discourse of the “cosmetics of hunger” – especially in its attack against the feature film City of God, by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund (Cidade de Deus, 2002) –, and also of its theoretical relations with the academic field of film studies in Brazil.Downloads
