The journalist on Journalism (1867-1771): unionism contribution to the portuguese journalistic thought
Keywords:
Journalism theory. Journalism history. Journalists. Portugal. National Union of Portuguese Journalists.Abstract
By using qualitative discourse analysis, the present work describes the conception of the condition of journalist in Journalismo (Journalism), an organ of the Sindicato Nacional dos Jornalistas de Portugal (National Union of Portuguese ournalists), between 1967 and 1971, during the time of the Portuguese Dictatorship, but also a flourishing and rejuvenating time for journalism. It has found out that the writers of this union periodical were less concerned about the theoretical discussion of this professional area and the definition of journalism than about the acknowledgement and recognition of this profession, both as a way of reinforcing class identity and as a basis for claiming better conditions in the exercise of journalism.
