The intersex body and the politicization of the abject in XXY

Abstract

What can the intersex body tell us? How does this issue get more complex if we think about its representation in the media, specially in cinema? In this article, starting from Lucia Puenzo's XXY, we pose these and other questions related to deviant bodies and desires. With a subversive and non-pathologizing discourse, XXY proposes a careful look at the subjectivities of these experiences. We argue that the film, in resonance with the queer studies, is alert to the politicization of the abject bodies.

Leandro Colling, Universidade Federal da Bahia

Possui graduação em Comunicação Social pela Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos (1996), mestrado (2000) e doutorado (2006) em Comunicação e Cultura Contemporâneas pela Universidade Federal da Bahia. Atualmente, é professor adjunto do Instituto de Humanidades, Artes e Ciências (IHAC) Professor Milton Santos e do Programa Multidisciplinar de Pós-graduação em Cultura e Sociedade, ambos da Universidade Federal da Bahia. Pesquisa as relações entre as sexualidades, gêneros e as culturas. É presidente da Associação Brasileira de Estudos da Homocultura, gestão 2011-2012, e integrante do Conselho Nacional de Combate à Discriminação e Promoção dos Direitos de Lésbicas, Gays, Bissexuais, Travestis e Transexuais, do governo federal.
