This study aimed to investigate the contributions of contemporary schools to the development of transcendence among high school students in the city of Sao Paulo. The instruments for the collection of data were: 1) surveys and 2) discussion groups. Descriptive frequency and variance analysis, as well as prose analysis, were used to process the data thus produced. The results revealed that schools contribute to the development of transcendence when: 1) they provide an environment in which the transcendental dimension can be explored; 2) they offer psycho-emotional support to students; 3) their teachers become mediators of deep knowledge by developing relationships based on humanizing practices.
