    Abstract

    The objective of this study was to describe the influence of medical knowledge about the organization of the school gymnastics in the 19th and early 20thcentury in Brazil. For this, it used as sources: thesis to obtain the title of Doctor of the Faculty of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro; documents of the National Academy of Medicine and the São Paulo Normal School. It was concluded that the hygienist mentality was instrumental in spreading the gymnastics in the Brazilian context.
