This article investigates how Brazilian popular television programs use emotion to construct narratives about violence and justice. Phrases such as “a good criminal is a dead criminal” highlight symbolic representations of discourses that reinforce Manichaean stereotypes, dehumanize marginalized populations, legitimize authoritarian practices, and encourage violence. The investigation employs rhetoric and discourse analysis to understand the narrative characteristics of these programs. In this article, the empirical analysis covered three programs: Documento Especial – Televisão Verdade, from Rede Manchete; Aqui Agora, from Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão; and Balanço Geral, from Rede Record. We observed that, by using emotion as an argumentative strategy, these programs connect to moral and ideological values, promoting punitive views that influence public opinion and uphold the status quo.
