Interview with biosemiotician Kalevi Kull, inheritor of the legacy of Tartu-Moscow School – birthplace of what is conventionally called Semiotics of Culture. Topics covered include current problems faced by biosemiotics, for example, the production of a basic model of semiosis that can be accepted by different strands of semiotic studies; and the proposal for a semiotics based on the concept of Umwelt, rather than on the one of sign. There is also a discussion of symbiosis, sustainability of semiotic systems and environmental crisis, and the role of semiotics in this type of contemporary debate.
