Abstract

The purpose of this article is to discuss the phenomenon of psychic suffering and exhaustion in the work environment, usually called burnout, in the light of Imaginary Studies, specifically, bringing homologies from Greek mythology to understand the condition and the symbolic crisis present in this phenomenon. The question raised was: what symbols can be raised and explored from the mythical martyrdoms, being these phenomena of the human psyche that do not correspond to a reading within a space-time? For our analysis, we chose the myth of the Danaids, who suffered the martyrdom of filling bottomless vats with water for all eternity. Carrying out this study from the perspective of Studies of the Imaginary, it becomes possible to understand the causes of suffering in a symbolic sense, as well as to point out ways that suggest how to deal with this current problem. The methodology chosen was a literature review and discussion of the works of authors such as Han, Contrera and Kast to reference our analyses, as well as the mythological readings of Brandão and Kerényi to investigate mythical martyrdoms.
