Learning by Drawing: successful experiences in the scientific and artistic training of pre-school teachers

Abstract

This reflective work is based on a theoretical framework on the role of drawing in science and its potential as a learning strategy. Two successful educational experiences with students on the degree course in early childhood education at the University of Valladolid (Spain) are described: one for the study of insects, and another for the study of plants. Under an artistic approach, students learned biological science content, improved their artistic graphic skills, and modified their initial attitudes of rejection and indifference towards the studied organisms. Finally, we reflect on the didactic possibilities of drawing and the shortcomings in research located at the intersection of art and science in education, an emerging field to which it is necessary to contribute through joint research.
