Strategic perspectives for modular construction adoption

Abstract

Various industrial sectors have adopted industrialized production. However, its application in the construction industry is still limited. Lack of knowledge, the need for innovative technologies, and the lack of adequate business strategies have hindered the adoption of modular construction (MC). However, a well-defined strategy can structure the adoption of MC, enabling the sector to gradually benefit from industrialized processes, achieving gains in time, quality, cost control, and production standardization. The research aims to elaborate business strategies for adopting MC based on the association and integration between phases, architecture, strategy, and modular product platforms. A systematic literature review (SLR) on MC is carried out, followed by a qualitative meta-synthesis to integrate the primary research results. This research goes beyond the results of the individual primary studies analyzed in the SRL, arriving at new contributions to knowledge in the form of associations and integrations between the concepts that give rise the business strategies presented. This analysis indicates a product platform designed to support three business strategies for structured CM adoption in the construction sector. From a practical and applied point of view, the research contributes to a greater systemic understanding of CM and supports strategic decision-making in its adoption process.
