Este estudo teórico tem como objetivo interrogar sobre os deslocamentos no lugar do mal estar no contexto das transformações em curso na pós-modernidade. Pretendemos, deste modo, explorar as nuances que marcam novos arranjos no cenário pós-moderno, que correspondem à hegemonia da técnica sobre a ciência, ao avanço do paradigma cibernético e à ênfase no pragmatismo e no utilitarismo como horizontes filosóficos atuais. Perguntar sobre o lugar do mal estar se justifica na medida em que parece ser um bom indicativo da subjetividade de uma época. Voltamo-nos para a análise dos discursos que enaltecem a ideia de superação de todos os limites que se apresentem como obstáculos ao alcance de um estado de felicidade plena, atribuindo consequentemente à experiência de mal estar um sentido de negatividade. Afinal, numa cultura cujos valores giram em torno da velocidade, do desempenho, da produtividade, da eficiência, da utilidade, qual seria o lugar do sofrimento?
