(Re)humanizing the paths: the deinstitutionalization of forensic psychiatric hospitals in Brazil

The study analyzes the challenges of deinstitutionalizing judicial asylums in Brazil, addressing social, political and institutional aspects. The research, based on a bibliographic and documentary review, highlights advances and obstacles in the implementation of more inclusive models of care. Deinstitutionalization seeks to overcome exclusionary practices, but faces institutional resistance and the permanence of asylums. Barriers such as social stigma and the lack of transition strategies hinder the reintegration of inmates. The article discusses ethical and legal challenges, highlighting the need for political commitment to guarantee rights and adequate care. International experiences, such as the Italian psychiatric reform, are mentioned as a reference for building community networks. Finally, the importance of cultural transformation and the qualification of health professionals are emphasized in order to effect significant changes and promote a more inclusive society.
