Indexing fiction films

Objective: recognizing the challenges that audiovisual language poses to the document analysis process, this study proposes a non-automated method for indexing fiction films. Method: this is an exploratory and bibliographic study that addresses methods for film indexing. The literature review was conducted using the Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts with Full Text database, OasisBr, BRAPCI and the Portal de Busca Integrada from Universidade de São Paulo, with a focus on the themes of document analysis, information retrieval, cinema, and films. Results: the proposed method is structured into three phases: (1) contextualizing the film; (2) viewing the film; and (3) indexing. This approach advances beyond proposals found in the Library and information science literature, which typically lack specific procedures for contextualizing and viewing the film. The study indicates that using this method requires recognizing the institutional context and target audience, which should be considered when developing an indexing policy. It also addresses the challenges of indexing based on colloquial terms and themes expressed as phrases, highlighting the importance of solutions for incorporating these types of subjects into libraries’ controlled vocabularies to meet the demand for new search models. Conclusions: the presented method can be widely used by librarians without specific training in audiovisual languages and applied to diverse collections. By providing a framework for the document analysis of films, it can also contribute to discussions on automated processes for film indexing.
