The concept of acquisition in Archival Science

This article aims to examine how archival terminology dictionaries define the term acquisition, and to analyze how these definitions influence the drafting of policies related to the acquisition of archival collections in Brazilian institutions. Additionally, it investigates how national academic production in the field has addressed this term. The research is justified by the diversity of meanings attributed to the concept under discussion. Fourteen meanings for the term acquisition were identified in six archival terminology dictionaries: commodatum, purchase, custody, donation-in-payment, deposit, donation, loan, intake, legacy, exchange, gift, transfer to archives, reinstatement, and transfer. These meanings were grouped into three categories: formal transfer of possession, formal transfer of ownership, and official transfer of documents. The study also highlights how archival institutions and the scientific community interpret the term. Although all categories imply the addition of archival documents or collections to a repository, each carries a distinct meaning. To support the clarification of acquisition methods, a glossary was prepared with the respective definitions.
