It analyzes the extent to which participation in a community of practice (CoP), a knowledge management strategy commonly used in organizations, can support the learning process of workers. It discusses the process of productive restructuring and its impact on educational policies and guidelines, which has led to the development of new education models and strategies for training workers in business environments. It presents concepts and pillars of knowledge management, addressing the conversion processes adopted to transform individual knowledge into knowledge of a group, an organization or even inter-organizational. Discusses, from a critical approach, concepts and main processes of a community of practice. It seeks to map out actions that, in a counter-hegemonic perspective, generate counterparts for the worker who participates in these collective learning environments. It has as empirical field a community of practice in the oil, natural gas and energy sector, where, through the application of questionnaires and interviews directed to the workers, it sought to ascertain what are the benefits and advantages that these members acquire when participating in a CoP. It concludes that, although a community of practice is designed primarily to respond to the needs of the organization and provide improvement and innovation in work processes, when approaching this type of initiative, the worker has access to knowledge that, otherwise, would not be obtained. This knowledge can be applied in other contexts, generating new job opportunities in the same sector or in other organizations of the same industry.
