Indexing is a central process in Information Retrieval Systems, consisting of subject analysis and translation. In library science teaching in Brazil, there are debates about the balance between theoretical and practical approaches to this subject. This study investigates the contents and methods present in the syllabuses of subject analysis courses offered by Brazilian universities, considering their relevance to the training of librarians. The objective is to analyze the syllabuses of subject analysis and related subjects in Library Science courses at federal and state universities in Brazil, identifying syllabus content, theoretical and practical approaches, and the level of terminological standardization. Based on Bardin’s technique, the study used content analysis to examine syllabuses obtained from higher education institutions. Information such as workload, semester offered, and subject names was organized in spreadsheets, and the data was supplemented by bibliographic research. The comparative approach was used to identify similarities and differences between the syllabuses. The results show a greater emphasis on practical techniques, lacking relevant theoretical foundations, such as Concept Theory and Faceted Classification. Inconsistent terminology was identified in terms such as “subject analysis”, “documentary analysis” and “indexing”, as well as variations related to “documentary typology”. Despite the inclusion of content on traditional products and tools, there is a gap in the integration of modern technologies, such as artificial intelligence, which are essential for contemporary professional practice. The study highlights the need for curriculum revisions that integrate theory and practice in a balanced way, promote terminological standardization, and incorporate current technological tools. These changes are fundamental to guaranteeing a solid academic education in line with contemporary market demands and the complexity of information organization and retrieval.
