conceptual aspects and their application to Archival Functions

Abstract

This research seeks to analyze the definitions relating to the concepts of knowledge organization and information organization and their applications in archival practice, from the archival functions of Classification, Evaluation and Description/Indexing. As specific objectives we seek to: (1) contextualize the Knowledge organization and information organization, as well as their processes, the representation of knowledge and representation of information; (2) discuss the concepts raised and present the terminological delimitation adopted for the research; (3) identify the dialogues between the knowledge and information organization and the archival functions of Classification, Description/Indexation and Evaluation. The methodology adopted was a bibliographic research, of the descriptive type, with a qualitative approach. As results it was possible to identify that there is no consensus among the authors analyzed to define the Knowledge organization and information organization, but there are points of intersection and discrepancy between the readings performed. After the analysis we adopt the view that, despite the lack of definition of the concepts, there is a distinction between Information organization and Knowledge organization, consequently of information representation and knowledge representation. And that Knowledge organization and Information organization apply to archival practices, based on the three functions presented. We conclude that Archival Science has dialogy has dialogues that cross current conceptual barriers and reach archival practice in a concrete way. It is believed that the research can be extended to encompass other functions beyond those identified here.
