The representative strategy for information visualization
a case study of John Snow’s map

The visualization of information in visual representations of content is a form of language designed to facilitate the reader's understanding of the complexity of topics, based on graphics, maps and infographics. The reduction of abstraction provided by such visual resources enhances the understanding of the represented information. In this way, we seek to understand the effects that the use of these tools project to ensure the reader's visualization and the roles they play in understanding the information represented. The theoretical foundation contains contributions from Information Science in dialogue with the field of Information Design. From a descriptive-explanatory research, of a documentary and bibliographic character, presented as a case study, the cholera map, organized by the English physician John Snow to record and explain the process of raising the needs, complications and decisions throughout the information collection, is analyzed in terms of the importance of using visual language for this purpose. As a result, it was found that the visualization used by John Snow's map made it possible to understand a large volume of information and that its performance is intrinsically linked to the selection of the information represented. In this way, the case study allows us to state that the visualization obtained is not only an effective resource for understanding the information, but also acts as an argumentative reinforcement, since the representation of information with graphic support can lead to greater ease of understanding by reducing the effort required to find and decipher it.
